Tips for storing food on a yacht

Over the years of wandering across the water, yachtsmen have compiled a universal set of products that can satisfy the food needs of the team ship.

The universal set of products includes vegetables (potatoes, onions, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.), fruits (apples, pears, oranges, peaches, etc.), meat , sausages, fish to choose from, chicken breasts, dairy products (cream, kefir, yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, etc.), canned food, bread, spices (salt, pepper, spices to choose from), water, juices to choose from.

In the event that a long hike is planned or a storm is expected (other unfavorable conditions), experienced specialists 2yachts recommend stocking up sandwiches or sandwiches, salads in plastic boxes are also suitable.

Placing food on board

So how to properly place the purchased products after a trip to the coastal supermarkets, so that they do not stick together from rolling into one big lump? Distribution of food on the yacht should be done in such a way that:

  • Firstly, everything fits and at the same time does not interfere with the steering and movement of the yacht;
  • Secondly, the packaging is not broken, not wrinkled;
  • Thirdly, if necessary, any product could be easily removed without much difficulty.

Before a long trip, all products should be sorted out and checked for freshness; if you find products that are not of the first freshness, you should undoubtedly send them to the trash can. It is necessary that one person supervises the loading of food - for example, a cook, while always marking the location of goods on the yacht diagram indicating the amount of products.

When loading the lockers with food, we observe the rule: everything hard and heavy is put down, everything light and fragile is put on top. It is advisable to overlay everything glass with soft materials (for example, paper towels or packs of napkins), and mesh hammocks can be used to stir fruits and vegetables - so they will "breathe", which is important. Vegetables must be sorted (some cannot stand being next to each other, because ethylene gas is released, which contributes to premature spoilage; bananas, apples and pears emit especially a lot of ethylene) - place the most mature ones closer to eat them as it ripens. Also, the menu should be the first to indicate more perishable foods (fish, eggs, milk), then - canned food and frozen foods, pasta and cereals. All fresh food will have to be bought at stops along the route of the yacht, primarily bread, vegetables, fruits and milk.

Dishes and packaging

All dishes should be made of metal and durable plastic. The dishes should not slide on the surface, which is important when the boat is rolling. The exceptions are wine glasses and juice glasses. If you are traveling on someone else's boat, in order to facilitate your fees, before rent a yacht, you should check availability of all necessary utensils.

Freezer bags, ventilated plastic baskets, mesh bags, paper towels, napkins, sponges, plastic containers with airtight lids, insecticides, etc. will help you to food storage on board. These things will not cost you much, but using them makes life on a yacht much easier.

Home appliances

On a yacht, you will really need a microwave - with its help it is very easy to heat food and organize hot snacks. If you have an oven, you need to take care of purchasing a pair of trays and grill grates for it. A food processor, coffee machine, and mixer are more of a luxury than a necessity, and it is better not to keep them on board.

Refrigerator is a very useful thing on board. After all, it can be filled with meat, poultry, seafood and fish, so as not to feel the need to purchase food in the ports of stopping. And if there is no refrigerator on board, or it is turned off to save energy, or is out of order, you can compensate for this by making changes to the menu. In this case, meat, poultry and fish must be purchased in vacuum packaging, as well as in the form of canned food. In addition to protein products, you will need to purchase a variety of vegetables and fruits, which together guarantees a fairly balanced diet on board.

If it turns out that you did not know about the malfunction of the refrigerator, and you bought thoroughly, do not worry. Most foods are not as sensitive to the lack of cold as people think. So, beef can be stored in a shaded place for up to 3 days, chickens - up to 5 days, and lamb for a whole week. If the meat is lightly sprinkled with salt, wrapped in a cloth moistened with sea water and vinegar, then these periods can be extended by another 1-3 days. Eggs can be stored longer by rubbing the shells with any type of fat (from sunflower oil to sunscreen).

The best option for storing food is a isothermal container that can keep cold from 24 hours to 10 days. You need to choose a more expensive model of the container, otherwise in the future you will spend impressive amounts on the purchase of spare parts for it. Styrofoam models are not suitable for yachts as the material breaks down easily and the lid does not fit snugly. It is best to select a container with a volume of 60-70 liters - then all the required amount of food will fit into it, along with ice. If you plan to lower the container to and from the dock each time, we recommend the model with wheels or purchase a special trolley for transportation.

All of the above tips will help you at any time to be provided with food on the yacht and not to throw away food spoiled by carelessness in large quantities. And the best seasoning when cooking on a yacht is, of course, the fresh sea air!
